Oh the anticipation. It was a long 20 minute drive home. I couldn't wait to partake in my little debbie snack cake! It had been 10 years since I have had one and it was heart shaped and it was going to taste so good. I even delayed my gratification until I unloaded and put away all of my groceries. I slowly and carefully opened the thin plastic wrapper and took my first bite while standing over the kitchen sink. Total bummer man. I do not remember them tasting like that... I am not sure what wax tastes like, but if I were to guess, it would taste something like the covering of that heart shaped cake.

First I am mad that I can't do my NC Sales Tax yearly. I have to do it quarterly, even if I only owe $2
Second, it just took me 2 hours of time away from my family to submit my NC sales tax this quarter.

What I have to do...

I have to find out where they put the "new" link on their website to file Sales Tax online. They like switch it around just to keep us on our toes.
I have to jump through hoops to login on multiple sales tax login pages on their NON-Intuitive pages
I have to download my sales report from Paypal
I have to do a search and get a listing of all the people I sold itesm to in North Carolina.
I have to look up each NC sale individually and find out the a) city they live in b) Gross Sales and the c) Sales Tax collected
I have to google the city (that each customer is from) to find out what COUNTY they live in.
I have to figure out which counties require me to pay 2% and which counties require me to pay 2.25% and remember that Mecklenberg county also tacts on an additional transit tax of .5%
I have to add up all the counties with 2% sales tax and enter that amount
I have to add up all the counties with a 2.25% sales tax and enter that amount
I have to individually type in the sales tax collected for each county in North Carolina next to the name of the county and be sure I put it in the correct column (either 2% or 2.25%)
Then I have to push NEXT and pray I didn't "mess" something up.
If I everything adds up (that has never happened) then to pay my sales tax online I have to pay an additional fee (I forget what they called it - "convenience" I think?) so that I can submit my numbers and pay it online.

God forbid I would need to call their "held desk" and ask anyone any questions... (enter slapstick humor here)

And THAT is how you pay your Quarterly North Carolina Sales Tax.

Ok. Thanks for letting me vent. I can now look forward to my evening on March 31 2012 when I get to do this all over again.

I didn't want to blog and facebook this but you don't have an email address on your homepage... it is very frustrating to get 10+ spam emails from one of your clients who uses your spam system and then when I have to spend 10 minutes unsubscribing I have to ENTER in the email address they sent the spam (I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO ENTER IN MY EMAIL ADDRESS TO UNSUBSCRIBE) but I don't know what that email address was and then I get this error message when I try to guess...

Canadian researchers find a simple cure for cancer, but major pharmaceutical companies are not interested.

Learned over the past 3 years that there are 2 distinct groups of people here in Morganton, NC; the "insiders" and the "outsiders" and then there are socio-economic classes within those distinctions. Still trying to figure it all out, it's complicated.
I do know that the people that love and accept others, no matter where they fall in their self imposed caste system, are happy and those that don't cause a lot of problems for everyone around them.

I appreciate that you all LOVE weather and weather related stuff but it is unnecessary and uninteresting information for me. I need to know what is going to affect me and my children, in a timely manner, here in Burke County. If I want to know what is going to affect the rest of the United States I will turn on the news or the Weather Channel. Burke Weather needs to be return to being Burke Weather because we can NOT get that on the "local" news and the Weather Channel. Focus people Focus. Safely kill Fleas and Ticks on your pets (and in your house)

Getting rid of fleas is a two-step process -- treat the pet and then, treat the house. The combination works, but both steps are necessary.

Treating your pet
Using diatomaceous earth is not a new idea when it comes to treating animals for fleas. DE is a naturally occurring rock, similar to pumice, and is comprised of the fossilized skeletons of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. The shells are abrasive, and when crushed into a powder, create a deadly insecticide for fleas, ticks, mites, bedbugs, chiggers and other insects. DE works by making microscopic cuts in the exoskeleton of the insect as they pass through the powder; and then absorbing their bodily fluids, killing them. It's safe to apply DE to pet fur as a powder and gently rub or brush it through. Leave it on the pet, and within 24 hours, fleas will be dead. However, take care to protect the pet and owner from inhaling the dust, which can cause damage to the lungs. Shake the powder on carefully and close to the pet's body to avoid creating a dust cloud. Ingested DE will not harm an animal and is useful for deworming instead of using veterinary chemicals.

In addition to applying DE to pets' coats, it can also be sprinkled around cracks and crevices in the home and on furniture. Vacuum up after allowing it to sit for several hours or longer. Use only pure food grade DE, which is available at feed stores and online.
Treating your house
Staphysagria is a homeopathic remedy known for being able to protect against the bites of certain insects, especially mosquitoes. Additionally, it makes an excellent flea repellant and insecticide when used as a spray around the house. No one knows exactly how the remedy works to kill fleas and other parasitic pests; however, anecdotal evidence indicates that mixing several pellets of Staphysagria 6C with water and spraying around cracks, crevices, and furniture will kill adult fleas and prevent eggs from maturing. Repeat twice a month or more frequently to keep the house free of fleas during summer.

Combining these two methods should rid pets of fleas and protect against new infestations. To ensure that dogs and outdoor cats remain free of fleas, apply DE to the yard with a fertilizer spreader. This must be done on a dry day where there is no threat of rain for several days afterwards. DE will not only destroy fleas, but will also kill ticks. To treat bushes for pests, place DE powder in a kitchen strainer and sprinkle throughout foliage. Repeat every few weeks during flea season.

Organic Popcorn

YEAH! I found some organic popcorn at Food Lion. They might have it at Ingles but I never walk down any of the isles at Ingles. I just go around the perimeter of the store. At Food Lion the organic isle is along the perimeter of the store so it is much easier to see any new organic items. I am also very glad to see they brought back the Organic Newman "oreos" (shhhh I haven't told my kids yet).

Note: I believe, after reading the evidence, that all non-organic corn products (corn oil, canola oil, popcorn, corn on the cob, corn chips, corn etc) cause sterility and so many more health problems - we don't eat any corn unless it is organic.

Movie Night

(20) Phosphorus. An important remedy for tickling coughs, worse from laughing and speaking. Patients are bubbly and outgoing, but with poor boundaries. Fearful and anxious. Fear of thunderstorms. Thirsty."

My morning experiment: I was so stuffed up I couldn't get the neti pot solution to go through my nose so I added a dash of cayenne pepper to my neti pot solution and it drained my nose, ears and eyes. I also have an odd sudden burst of energy and mental alertness I did not have 5 minutes ago!!! Perhaps that is why some recommend putting cayenne under the nose of someone who is having a heart attack?

My sore throat is completely gone but now I have a totally stuffy nose... thankfully it is not an infection (yet?!) neti pot, apple cider vinegar, green drink, vitamin C and more neti pot =) My patience is not at its norm so this morning didn't go well with CJ... he is still detoxing from last weekend so he is not his normal self either... double wammy!!! CJ got Movie Night taken away.

Update: CJ traded Movie Night for NO TV or video games all weekend. I guess Movie Night is important to him. I hope it still is while he is in high school =) Maybe his girl friends can come over and have movie night with us instead of them going out on a Friday night?!

One of my many favorite recipes of Ruth's (she lived with us for a while too) was her Carrot Cake Recipe.
Organic Carrot Cake Recipe
(use all organic ingredients)

1 c crushed and drained pineapple
1 c butter (2 sticks @ room temperature)
1 c brown sugar
1 c white sugar
3 free range eggs
3-4 c shredded carrots
1 c raisins
2 t real vanilla
3 c unbleached flour
2 t aluminum free baking soda
1 t cinnamon
1 t ginger
1/2 t salt

Directions:
Drain pineapple. Cream butter and sugars until creamy. Organic sugar is bigger than other sugars so you will need to let it sit for a little while so the sugar and butter melt together. While you are waiting shred 3-4 cups of carrots. Add eggs to to butter/sugar mixture one at a time. Beat in pineapple, carrots, raisins and vanilla. Combine remaining ingredients and gradually add to pineapple mixture until well blended. Pour into buttered 13"x9"glass baking dish. Bake at 350 for 40-50 minutes, until tooth pick comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.
